Psychiatry was not a specialty I happened to find along the way. From the time I entered college, I knew that mental health and substance use treatment were where I wanted my career to lead. I bring a decade of nursing experience to my practice, including critical care and extensive experience in psychiatric emergency and substance use settings. Much of my career has been spent working with people at some of the most difficult, vulnerable, and complicated points in their lives.
That experience has taught me that there is usually much more to a person’s story than what appears in a medical chart. Trauma, relationships, environment, setbacks, resilience, and the paths we take through life all matter. I believe good psychiatric care starts with understanding that story, and not judging it.
I work with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, mood disorders, substance use disorders, trauma-related concerns, and other mental health challenges. You can expect me to be straightforward, open-minded, and willing to listen. My goal is for you to feel comfortable being honest about where you are and what you’ve been through, without worrying that your past will define how you are treated.
Making the decision to seek mental health or substance use treatment can be one of the most difficult steps a person takes. I understand the courage it can require to ask for help, trust someone with your story, and begin making changes when you may not know exactly what comes next. I am a psychiatric nurse practitioner with a nursing and counseling career spanning over 25 years. I completed a Bachelor of Arts in Developmental Psychology from Ohio State University in 2000, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Otterbein University in 2006, a Master of Science in Nursing from Otterbein University in 2013 and a Doctor of Nursing Practice (Psychiatric-Mental Health Lifespan) at Rush University in 2016. I've taught as a clinical instructor and preceptor at both undergraduate and graduate levels. I have experience working in inpatient, outpatient and residential settings with patients ranging from adolescents to octogenarians. Much of my career has been specializing in substance use disorders, although I am happy to treat a broad range of mental health, as well as dual diagnosis. I’m Dr. Madeline Michel, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with nearly 20 years of nursing experience and more than 13 years of experience as a nurse practitioner. I earned my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University and hold three board certifications as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, and Gerontological Nurse Practitioner through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of caring for individuals across the lifespan in a variety of clinical settings. My professional background includes psychiatry, substance use disorders, cognitive disorders, and neurology. I previously practiced as a neurology hospitalist nurse practitioner at several hospitals throughout South Florida and as a cognition-specialized Gerontological Nurse Practitioner at the Louis and Anne Green Memory Wellness Center, a state-designated Memory Disorder Clinic. These experiences have given me a broad understanding of the relationship between mental, cognitive, neurological, and physical health.
